Great, Normsoft. How about a simple patch for version 3.x Deluxe to fix the backlight problem rather than insisting people pay for a full 'upgrade' in order to get the backlight to turn off during play?

I can just about buy a spare battery for the 'upgrade' fee, and I presume Normsoft already received licensing fees for PT (nondeluxe) version 4.x which remains dormant and unused in my 755's ROM...

Crippling a product's basic function so it won't work properly on a lateral hardware change unless one pays a ridiculous 'upgrade' fee just plain sucks. Developers that engage in this type of unnecessary customer 'churn' just lose goodwill and encourage people to seek out cracked programs in the future. Palmgear and others seem to be selling less software lately - certainly the 'once bitten, twice shy' factor on buying software comes into play to some degree here.

Thankfully PDAnet has slowed down with these huge 'upgrade' fees every hardware release, but Normsoft (which Palm has likely already *GIVEN* licensing fees to for each device) still insists on a full upgrade fee just to get the 755's backlight to stay off during play.

Joad brings up an excellent point about 'once bitten, twice shy'.

I once counted (this was probably 1.5 to 2 years ago or so!) and well over 1/2 of the Palm OS apps/games I had bought since 2001 or so ended up abandoned and/or disappeared entirely. I have games on my computer that I purchased in 1996 for Win95 that STILL run decently under Vista. Yet why is an app from 2003 that I bought for my T2 or T3 not running (or runs with issues) today on my TX or 700p?

And there are still plenty of developers/software stores charging premium prices for stuff that predates NVFS and the newer Treos where there's no way to exit the program short of resetting your device!

I can think of several games that I personally own that exhibit this behavior. Part of this is Palm's fault, part of this is the developer's fault, part of this is the publisher/seller's fault for claiming compatibility and part of it can arguably be the customer's fault for expecting too much. And by upgrading to Vista on my PC I know I've lost any hope of the conduits of many Palm OS apps ever working properly again...

At any rate, I'm almost glad to see the POS market imploding. In many ways, an entirely fresh start under the next-gen OS might not be such a bad idea after all.

joad, I'm sorry that you are unhappy. NormSoft goes to great lengths to make our customers happy. It's unfortunate that we can't be everything for everybody.

To be clear, this update is free for people using the free version of Pocket Tunes that comes with the 755p. It will offer you a free trial of Deluxe, which you can cancel at any time. After the trial, you can keep using 4.0.5 in Bundle mode, which retains the capabilities of Pocket Tunes but includes new bug fixes. These free updates are provided as a courtesy to our customers who received Pocket Tunes for free; we don't receive any money for providing these updates.

joad is in an unusual situation. He purchased Pocket Tunes 3.1 Deluxe before the 755p was released. At the time he purchased 3.1, NormSoft knew nothing about the future device and did not claim to be compatible with any Treos other than the ones listed on its website. joad then purchased a 755p and found that Pocket Tunes 3.1.8 is not fully-compatible with this device, as expected. NormSoft had since gone on to release 4.0 in December 2006, and we are no longer updating 3.1 in an effort to ensure that we can provide the greatest number of improvements to our customers in the latest version.

As a good faith gesture, we gave a large number of free updates to customers who bought 3.1 shortly before 4.0 was released. joad, I could not find any attempt to contact our customer support department under the name listed in your profile. If you wish to contact us via the support link on our website, we will be happy to see if you qualify for a free or reduced-price upgrade to the most recent version.

Like I've said a bunch of times, the much touted, so-called Palm Economy is a farce. Everybody wants $20-30 for their little utility that provides some piece of functionality that should probably have come with the phone in the first place. It would cost me hundreds of dollars to turn my 680 into the phone it should be, feature-wise.

I mean, ~$40 for an MP3 player? Really?

I think Normsoft have excellent tech support, look how quickly they replied here. They are listening to the stuff we say on here, and always reply quickly on the mailing lists too.

They also produce the best MP3 player for the Treo. An MP3 player is a complicated bit of software, and they really enhanced the functionality of my Treo. Well worth $40 to me.

Palm got off to a bad, bad start back in the OS 5.0 Tungsten T days by using SUCH lame quality audio hardware and the feeble RealPlayer on the T|T. Back when Mp3 players were still basically a novelty, Palm could (and SHOULD) have played the T|T and its brethren up as PDA/PMP hybrid solutions. By the time PTunes and AeroPlayer got in gear and were stable and Palm got their volume/audio quality issues sorted out on the T3, the iPod started making its presence known.

One of the major attractions back in '02/'03 when most digital cameras still had pitiful 1.5' or 1.8' LCDs was being able to pop out your SD card, insert it into your Tungsten and view your camera photos in fullscreen mode.

Palm should have realized 6 years ago that they were underutilizing the capabilities of their own handhelds and focused on having a solid, all-in-one photo/music/video playing media app bundled with every OS 5.x device. While I love PTunes, MobiTV, Kinoma, SplashPhoto, and CorePlayer, (and tolerate Palm's Photo/camera apps), it irks me having to hop from one app to the next (all occupying precious RAM space) in order to switch between photos, videos, mp3s, and streaming media. Of course, each app has its inherent strengths and core capabilities and I am reluctant to try to make do with, say, just 1 or 2 of the above programs.

Kudos to Tim & Normsoft for their good customer service, regularly released updates, and commitment to the Palm OS. I also love the integrated automatic version checker/download built into PTunes! Now if we could JUST get Normsoft to somehow convince Palm to incorporate a proper stereo 3.5mm headphone jack on the next Treo...

I agree hk, Palm quite simply blew it. They have completely blown so many opportunities to be the first player in so many markets. I think it's because deep down, they knew that for all the work they would have put in, someone else, like Apple, would have just taken the market from them.
